In recent years there has been massive investment by schools in ICT equipment and training for staff. In recognition of the capacity of ICT to support the teaching process a strong focus of this investment has been on the enhancement of the teaching and learning process. Whilst there has been enormous progress in this area in primary, secondary and special schools, the impact on learners and pupil achievement has been difficult to measure. The difficulties that many schools have experienced in integrating ICT into the teaching and learning process indicate that such integration is not easy. There are issues of access to the technology and training to be considered, but more importantly use of ICT to have a positive impact on learners and their achievement depends on the transformation of the experience of teaching and learning. Increasingly there are LEA wide initiatives to consolidate learning to date and to provide the economies of scale necessary to drive the benefits of ICT in each school (an example being the ICT pathfinder PFI’s).
