School Self-Review

Future Proof

Cocentra have developed Future Proof, a programme to support school transformation by using state-of-the-art systems for self-review and evaluation.

The underlying purpose of Future Proof is for schools to evaluate their capacities to achieve and maintain high performance and to respond effectively to change through their development as ‘learning organisations’.

Why is Future Proof important?

There has been a developing recognition in recent years that highly effective schools are good at self-review and evaluation. This has been acknowledged very strongly in the recent update of the Ofsted school inspection framework. As the issues facing schools become more complex, the importance of supporting improvement planning with high-quality self-review will become even more critical. We believe that Future Proof can provide this and ensure that schools are able to respond systematically and effectively to the challenges they face.

The key features

It is:

  • School self-review which involves all staff, pupils and governors.
  • An audit process that includes robust and comprehensive evidence collection using a range of techniques, including attitudinal surveys

It contains:

  • A direct focus on the leadership of the headteacher
  • A distinctive focus on evaluating the school’s organisational culture
  • An in depth evaluation of the school’s most important activity - teaching and learning. This includes a teacher self-review
  • The provision of performance criteria for all the areas of school activity covered in the review to enable schools to identify ‘what good looks like’
  • An audit process that models best practice in school-self-review and evaluation and therefore supports the transformation of organisational values and systems

It gives:

  • Judgements against two key aspects of the school’s performance – their ‘efficiency and effectiveness’ and their ‘capacity to respond to and sustain change’
  • A summary report that makes specific proposals on how the school might respond to any development areas identified by the review

Future Proof aims

At the heart of Future Proof is a state-of-the-art framework for school self-review and evaluation. The framework’s aims are to enable schools to:

  • Develop as ‘learning organisations’
  • Have a model of ‘what good looks like’
  • Have a comprehensive system for evaluating their performance based on hard evidence
  • Make summary judgements about the key aspects of their performance
  • Identify areas of effective and less effective practice
  • Make standardised year-on-year comparisons of their performance
  • Identify potential development options for areas of less effective practice

    Future Proof options

When using Future Proof schools may choose between two options:

‘The Essential Audit’ and ‘The Targeted Audit’

The purpose of the Essential Audit is for schools to carry out a comprehensive review of twelve key areas of school activity. This audit is carried out quickly and sets a benchmark for the school’s performance. We recommend that schools carry out the Essential Audit annually.

The purpose of the Targeted Audit is for schools to carry out an in-depth review of one particular area of school activity. This audit might take longer than the Essential Audit and would include a more extensive range of methods for collecting evidence. Schools would use the Targeted Audit when they consider there is some area of the school’s performance that is not working as effectively as it should and they wish to develop a deeper understanding of the issues.

    The Essential Audit

The Essential Audit is focused on collecting evidence in the five ‘Key Domains’ and seven ‘Supporting Domains’.

    Key Domains (Comprehensive evidence collection)

Leadership by the HeadteacherOrganisational CultureQuality of Teaching and LearningCurriculum and AssessmentPupil Attainment

    Supporting Domains (Summary evidence collection)

Self-Review, Evaluation & Development PlanningPerformance Management & Continuing Prof. Development Behaviour Management Leadership of Promoted Staff
    Pupil WelfarePartnershipsFinancial Management

At the end of the Essential Audit schools will have an overview of:

    1. The things they do well
    2. Areas that need further development.
    3. Areas that require further investigation by the collection of more evidence using a Targeted Audit

    Pricing

As the level of work involved with each audit will vary in terms of advisor and analyst time dependent on the size and structure of the organisation being audited, it is not possible to be definitive on price and will depend on individual school circumstances. Please contact us if you would like to discuss pricing for your organisation in more detail.

  • The costs of delivery could reduce significantly in 2nd and following years dependent on the structure of the audit approach.
