From Subject Manager to Leader of Pupil and Teacher Learning

The factsGlasses with newspaper
  • Learning and teaching is at the heart of every school's agenda.
  • You need to be able to demonstrate progress to all stakeholders.
  • You will have recently restructured your teaching and learning responsibilities.
  • You will have a view about the overall quality of learning and teaching.
  • You almost certainly undertake observations of teaching.
Concerns
  • The security of in-house judgements.
  • The ability of middle leaders to lead the development of learning and teaching.
  • The evidence to demonstrate impact for parents, governors and external agencies.
  • Having structures which support all your staff.
  • Having effective systems for collecting, collating and analysing the quality of learning and teaching at whole school, subject and individual teacher level.
Actions
We have developed a complete range of products and services to help schools ensure that their systems and structures have real impact. They are available in modular form so you can choose exactly what is right for you.
Subject leaders and coordinators or heads of department need to be thought of as leaders of learning for both pupils and staff. Improving learning and teaching is their prime accountability as driven by the new Teaching and Learning Responsibilities and TLR structure. Most schools have pockets of good practice but the leadership needs to further build on their systems and processes for monitoring, evaluation and development. Schools must be able to provide evidence that these systems and processes are in place and effective.
